A boy in Orange who began choking on food during a class break on Wednesday has been airlifted to hospital.

Glenroi Heights Public School staff acted swiftly by immediately providing first aid and calling Triple Zero when a male student began to choke whilst eating during a class break on Wednesday 19 July 2023," said a NSW Department of Education Spokesperson.

"Staff remained with the student at all times."

Other students in the area were immediately moved to classrooms by staff during the incident.

"Multiple emergency service vehicles attended the school, including ambulance and a medical helicopter, which landed on the sports field adjacent to the school," said the spokesperson.

Police also attended the school to provide support to paramedics.

"The student, along with his mother, were transported to hospital by helicopter," said the spokesperson.

They said the school is providing counselling and wellbeing support for all staff and students involved.

In a social media post Glenroi Heights Public School principal Tegan Davis said the child had suffered a "medical emergency".

"I want to reassure you that school is safe," she said. "Students remain working in classrooms during this time and have access to their food and water," she said.

"Pick up is as normal for the end of the day."
