The next chapter of the Lucknow Tavern is soon to be written, with a cellar door planned under new owner Tony Jones.
Jones and family, who run Jones & Smith Distillery in Spring Hill, bought the Mitchell Highway pub on December 22. It had been listed by Blowes Real Estate.
He told The Orange News Examiner that once final settlement was completed in coming weeks the family would take over the venue.
“It’s looking good, there isn’t much to do,” Jones said.
The tavern may ultimately undergo a name change.
Jones said he had worked for much of his career in hospitality, and that the secret to running a successful pub was simply “a lot of hard work”.
Established in 2017, Jones & Smith Distillery makes gin and whisky. Jones had hoped to open a cellar door at the craft distillery, but said Orange City Council had knocked back development applications.
“We thought we had Buckley’s chance of ever getting it through, so we had to look elsewhere,” Jones said.
That elsewhere was the Lucknow Tavern.
Set on about 920 square metres of land, the 350-square-metre pub has undergone extensive renovations, and has new beer lines and taps. There are 12 parking spots.
The sales listing stated that “kitchen appliances all in excellent order”. There are two bedrooms. It was described as a “reluctant sale”.
Jones said he hoped to continue the tradition of food at the pub, which has also been known as the Lucknow Goldfields Tavern.
