Residents around Roselawn Drive in north Orange near the Botanic Gardens were woken on Sunday at about 3:30am by the sound of people arguing.
One resident told The Orange News Examiner that they opened their front door and saw a group of young adults involved in what appeared to be some type of verbal dispute.
Three cars had been parked on Bonnie Doon Place, a small cul-de-sac that runs off Roselawn Drive.
Police were called, but before they arrived a white Mazda had been set alight on a vacant block on the corner of Bonnie Doon Place and Roselawn Drive, and the group had vanished in the vehicles.
Local police say the incidence of vehicle theft and arson typically spikes in Orange over summer, and in particular school holidays.
Orange Fire and Rescue received a call at 3:42am Sunday.
One truck with a crew of four attended, arriving at 3:48am. The fire was extinguished by 4:05am.
